Stress means different things to different people. Every change, whether good or bad, can create some measure of stress. A promotion or a demotion, a marriage, or a divorce will cause stress. The way we per¬ceive the change influences our experience of stress. We experience stress when demands placed on us tax our resources and we think harm will come as a result. The demands placed on our resources can be perceived either as a challenge to stretch ourselves or a threat that endangers our well being. A stress demand is anything that requires a physical, emotional, intellectual, or spiritual response. If we feel that a demand exceeds our coping abilities, we might perceive the demand as a threat. For our purposes, we define stress as any adaptation a person makes in response to a change or a demand. The adaptation can be behavioral, physical, emotional, or intellectual.
